Mitsubishi Motors to Invest $470 Million in Thailand's EV Sector

BANGKOK — Mitsubishi Motors has announced plans to invest 16 billion baht (approximately $470 million) in Thailand by 2030, with the goal of transforming its existing operations into a major production and export hub for electrified vehicles. This investment is part of a broader strategy to capitalize on Thailand's growing electric vehicle market.

The Thai government has identified electric vehicles (EVs) as a crucial component of its long-term economic growth strategy. Analysts at the Board of Investment (BOI) noted that Thailand is positioning itself as a regional manufacturing hub for EVs.

Mitsubishi's investment will focus on enhancing its manufacturing capabilities to meet the increasing demand for EVs both domestically and in export markets. The company aims to leverage Thailand's favorable investment climate and existing automotive infrastructure to boost its production capacity for electrified vehicles.

Industry experts suggest that Mitsubishi's commitment reflects a larger trend among automakers to shift towards sustainable transportation solutions. The move is also seen as a response to rising competition from both established brands and new entrants in the EV market, particularly from China, which has been making significant inroads into Thailand's automotive landscape.

In addition to Mitsubishi, other major automotive players are also expanding their EV offerings in Thailand, indicating a robust growth trajectory for the sector. As the market evolves, the Thai government continues to promote policies aimed at incentivizing the adoption of electric vehicles, including tax breaks and subsidies for manufacturers and consumers alike.
