Infineon Launches $1.4 Billion Semiconductor Plant Near Bangkok

BANGKOK — Infineon Technologies AG, a leading German semiconductor manufacturer, has officially opened its first plant in Thailand, marking a significant investment of approximately $1.4 billion. The facility, located in Samut Prakan, south of Bangkok, is poised to support Thailand's ambitions to become a regional semiconductor hub, particularly in the production of power modules for electric vehicles (EVs) and data centers.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on a date that has not been explicitly confirmed, attended by Infineon's Chief Operations Officer, Dr. Rutger Wijburg, and a representative of the Thai government. The first building of the plant is planned to commence operations in a timeframe that has not been explicitly confirmed, with the project receiving backing from the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), which aims to enhance the local semiconductor ecosystem.

“As decarbonization and digitalization are strong structural growth drivers for the semiconductor industry, we are establishing a state-of-the-art backend fab in Thailand to meet future customer demand and strengthen supply chain resilience.”Dr. Rutger Wijburg, COO of Infineon

Infineon's new facility will focus on back-end production processes, which are critical for the assembly and packaging of semiconductor devices. This strategic move aligns with global trends toward decarbonization and digitalization, as demand for efficient power modules continues to rise, especially in industrial applications and renewable energy sectors. According to Wijburg, the company is establishing a state-of-the-art backend fab in Thailand to meet future customer demand and strengthen supply chain resilience.

The establishment of this plant is seen as a pivotal step in Thailand's strategy to integrate into the global semiconductor supply chain. The BOI has emphasized that this investment reflects confidence in Thailand's business environment and underscores the government's commitment to fostering the semiconductor industry. In December 2024, the government established the National Semiconductor and Advanced Electronics Policy Committee to further support this sector, aiming to position Thailand as a key player in the global semiconductor landscape.

Infineon's investment also includes plans to develop a research and development center in Thailand, which will collaborate with local universities and research institutions to enhance workforce skills in semiconductor technology. The initiative aims to cultivate local talent and improve the capabilities of Thai firms to meet international standards in semiconductor manufacturing.

Overall, Infineon's new facility is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of Thailand's semiconductor industry, enhancing its competitiveness in the global market and supporting the country's transition towards more sustainable energy solutions.
