Chinese Automakers BYD and GWM Expand Production in Thailand

Chinese automakers BYD and Great Wall Motor (GWM) are significantly expanding their manufacturing presence in Thailand, reflecting the country's growing importance as a regional automotive hub. BYD recently announced that its factory in Rayong has produced a total of 100,000 electric vehicles, with the BYD ATTO 3 being the milestone vehicle. This facility, which began delivering vehicles in July 2024, is BYD's first manufacturing plant outside of China and has a production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles per year.

Since its inception, BYD has invested over 30 billion baht (approximately $870 million) in Thailand and currently produces five models: DOLPHIN, ATTO 3, SEAL 5 DM-i, SEALION 5 DM-i, and SEALION 6 DM-i. The company has also established partnerships with over 266 local suppliers, contributing to a local content ratio of approximately 53.57% in its production. In the first half of 2026, about 40% of its output was exported to markets in ASEAN, South Asia, Australia, and Europe, totaling over 24,000 units.

Meanwhile, GWM, which has been operating in Thailand since 2020, is also ramping up its local operations. The company has invested over 20 billion baht (approximately $580 million) and plans to invest an additional 10,000 million baht (around $290 million) to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities. GWM's Rayong facility is designed to produce various powertrain systems, including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and diesel engines, with a maximum annual production capacity of 80,000 vehicles.

GWM aims to increase the proportion of locally sourced parts in its vehicles, currently estimated at 45-52%, depending on the model. The company collaborates with over 60 local and international suppliers, and it is set to host the GWM Sourcing Day 2026 on November 11, 2026, in Chonburi to engage local manufacturers in its supply chain.

Both BYD and GWM's expansions highlight a strategic shift in Thailand's automotive sector, moving from merely assembling vehicles for local consumption to establishing comprehensive production bases that integrate local suppliers. Analysts indicate that the presence of major automakers like BYD and GWM will drive local manufacturers to upgrade their standards and technologies to remain competitive in the evolving automotive landscape.
