Vietjet and CFM International Collaborate on Engine Maintenance Development in Vietnam

Vietjet Air has entered into a letter of intent with CFM International to assess the feasibility of developing maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities for the LEAP engine in Vietnam. This initiative comes as Vietjet expands its fleet of next-generation aircraft, including an order for 200 Boeing 737-8s powered by CFM LEAP-1B engines.

According to CFM International, the collaboration will involve a comprehensive evaluation of Vietjet's MRO requirements, including technical capabilities, infrastructure, workforce needs, and other industry considerations. Gaël Méheust, President and CEO of CFM International, highlighted that Vietnam is one of the most dynamic aviation markets in the world and expressed enthusiasm for continuing the successful partnership with Vietjet.

Vietjet's CEO, Nguyễn Thanh Sơn, emphasized the importance of technical expertise and a skilled workforce in building a robust aviation industry. He stated that a strong aviation industry needs more than a modern fleet and an extensive network; it needs deep technical expertise and highly skilled people. This collaboration with CFM is expected to contribute to establishing a comprehensive aviation ecosystem in Vietnam.

The partnership aims not only to meet Vietjet's long-term operational needs but also to foster the development of a high-tech aerospace industry in Vietnam. This includes training engineers to international standards and enhancing Vietnam's position in the global aviation value chain.

CFM International has been a partner of Vietjet since 2014 when the airline took delivery of its first Airbus A320ceo powered by CFM56 engines. Currently, Vietjet operates 50 aircraft equipped with CFM56 engines. The new agreement marks a significant evolution in their relationship as Vietjet prepares to integrate a larger fleet of LEAP-powered aircraft.

The development of MRO capabilities is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of Vietnam's aerospace services sector, aligning with the Vietnamese government's vision for the industry. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance local capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign maintenance services.
