Thailand's SMEs Seek Financial Support Amid Flood Recovery Efforts

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has called for financial support to aid small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) affected by the recent severe flooding in Thailand. The country is grappling with the economic fallout from heavy rains that have inundated large areas, particularly in Bangkok and central Thailand.

FTI emphasized the urgent need for financial assistance to help SMEs recover from the disaster. Many businesses are struggling to regain their footing, as the flooding has severely disrupted operations and damaged infrastructure. The request for funding aims to facilitate a quicker recovery process for these enterprises, which are crucial to the Thai economy.

In response to the flooding crisis, major financial institutions such as Krungthai Bank and the Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM Bank) have rolled out various relief measures. These include lower interest rates, reduced repayments, and extended loan terms for affected customers. For instance, Krungthai Bank is allowing customers with existing home loans and SME term loans to reduce their monthly repayments by 75% for one year, with a 0% interest rate for the first three months followed by a fixed rate of 2.5% a year for the next 33 months on these loans.

EXIM Bank has also tailored its assistance to meet the specific needs of business customers affected by the floods, providing repayment flexibility and additional working capital, including temporarily increasing eligible customers’ existing credit limits by 20% at the same interest rate as their current facility. These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure that businesses can continue operations and maintain employment levels amid ongoing economic challenges.

“The recovery of the SME sector is critical for the overall economic stability of the country.”Bank of Thailand, economic report

Many SMEs have been struggling due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left them vulnerable to further disruptions from natural disasters.

According to the Bank of Thailand, the recovery of the SME sector is critical for the overall economic stability of the country. The central bank has been working on additional financial measures to support businesses, particularly those in sectors that have been heavily impacted, such as tourism and retail.

As Thailand continues to navigate the aftermath of the flooding, the collaboration between government bodies, financial institutions, and industry groups will be vital in ensuring that SMEs receive the necessary support to rebuild and thrive in the future.
