Severe Flooding in Thailand: 19 Dead and 700,000 Affected in Bangkok

Severe flooding across Thailand has resulted in at least 19 fatalities, according to the Thai Health Ministry. The flooding has impacted 23 provinces, with most deaths attributed to drowning and electrocution, as reported by the Thai Enquirer.

In response to the crisis, the Thai government declared a two-day special holiday in Bangkok and neighboring provinces including Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, and Samut Prakan. The Health Ministry indicated that 49 healthcare facilities were affected, with 24 remaining operational, three partially closed, and 22 suspending services.

Rainfall has eased in Bangkok as a low-pressure system moves away, although monsoon showers persist, particularly in the eastern areas of the capital. The Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, stated that authorities are prioritizing the drainage of major canals to lower water levels in affected neighborhoods.

Reports indicate that around 329,000 households, or roughly 700,000 individuals, are impacted by the flooding. Notable districts suffering the most include Lat Krabang, Bang Kapi, and Khan Na Yao. Some roads, such as stretches of Phetchaburi Road, have reopened, while others remain submerged.

In addition to the fatalities in Bangkok, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported that eight people have died in eastern provinces, including five in Sa Kaeo and two in Chanthaburi. The DDPM also noted that over 500,000 households and 1.7 million people across 27 provinces have been affected by flooding.

Authorities have mobilized resources to assist those affected, including relocating about 1,500 bedridden patients to hospitals and responding to requests for aid via social media. Relief supplies such as ready-to-eat meals, drinking water, and mobile kitchens are being distributed.

As the situation develops, officials continue to monitor water levels and provide updates on the recovery efforts. The Thai government emphasizes the importance of public safety and has urged residents in vulnerable areas to take precautions.
