Drones Provide Lifeline to Flooded Bangkok Residents

In the wake of severe flooding in Bangkok, two large transport drones have been deployed to deliver food and emergency supplies to residents trapped in the Kheha Rom Klao community. This area has been particularly hard-hit, with some locations inaccessible by traditional means such as boats. Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat confirmed that six drones are part of the operation, with four smaller drones being used for reconnaissance and two larger drones capable of carrying up to 80 kilograms delivering supplies via 20-meter cables.

The initiative is a collaboration involving the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Rom Sai rescue workers, King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok, Sistronics Co., and several educational institutions, aiming to reach heavily flooded areas that have been fenced off, making it impossible for boats to deliver aid. Yodchanan noted that he personally witnessed the drones successfully delivering supplies to residents in need.

In addition to drone deliveries, the Social Development Ministry has established a central kitchen in the area to expedite food preparation and distribution. This effort is part of a broader response to the flooding crisis that has affected approximately 700,000 people in Bangkok. The situation has escalated to the point where a disaster has been declared, with authorities working diligently to manage the ongoing crisis.

Moreover, the National Police Bureau has also mobilized drone teams, including both city and border patrol units, to assist in delivering essential items such as food and drinking water to areas that are difficult to access due to the flooding. This initiative, referred to as the royal drone project, is part of the royal initiative to enhance disaster relief efforts in Thailand.

The use of drones in disaster response reflects an innovative approach to overcoming logistical challenges posed by natural disasters.
