Severe Flooding in Thailand: Over 1.17 Million Households Affected
Heavy rains and runoff have inundated large areas, particularly in central Thailand and Bangkok, leaving millions in distress.

Severe flooding continues to impact Thailand, with 1,177,404 households affected nationwide as of October 2, 2026. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) reported that heavy rainfall, combined with runoff from northern provinces, has led to widespread inundation across 27 provinces, affecting 154 districts, 1,209 tambons, and 8,790 villages, including significant areas in Bangkok.
According to DDPM Director-General Nirat Pongsitthaworn, the situation has seen a slight improvement from the previous reports, where flooding was noted in 31 provinces, impacting more than 1.24 million households. However, the number of people affected remains high, with estimates indicating that over 3.5 million individuals are currently facing difficulties due to the floods.
“The situation remains dynamic, with water levels rising, stabilising or receding depending on the location.”Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Thailand
In Bangkok, approximately 329,000 households have been affected, with the city experiencing significant challenges as water levels fluctuate. Reports indicate that while some areas are beginning to see water recede, others remain critically inundated. For instance, the Klong Chan area in Bang Kapi has seen water levels drop to around 30 centimeters, yet other parts like Romklao are still struggling with high water levels, raising concerns about further rainfall exacerbating the situation.
The flooding crisis has been ongoing since mid-September, with the DDPM noting that the situation has been compounded by continuous heavy rains and river overflows. As of now, 31 provinces are still experiencing flooding, with the central region being the most severely affected. In particular, provinces like Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani have reported significant impacts, with thousands of households displaced and infrastructure severely affected.
“Emergency response efforts are underway, with the government mobilizing resources to assist those in need.”Nirat Pongsitthaworn, DDPM Director-General
Emergency response efforts are underway, with the government mobilizing resources to assist those in need. The DDPM has coordinated with local authorities and volunteer groups to provide aid, including water, food, and medical supplies to affected areas. Furthermore, they are working to assess damage and facilitate recovery efforts as water levels begin to stabilize in some regions.
As the situation develops, officials are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and prepared for potential further rainfall, which could lead to additional flooding. The ongoing crisis has raised concerns regarding the challenges Thailand faces during the monsoon season, particularly in urban areas where drainage systems can become overwhelmed.
