The Thai government is intensifying efforts to promote small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the rice sector, aiming to enhance their presence in the global market, particularly in China. According to Arada Fuangthong, Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade, the initiative, titled “Elevating Thai Rice SMEs to the Global Market,” is being implemented in collaboration with the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP).

This initiative includes a significant event, the “Thai Rice Roadshow: Think Rice Think Thailand,” scheduled for July 17-19 in Guangzhou, China. The event aims to create trade opportunities, expand business networks, and facilitate the entry of Thai rice into the Chinese market, which is recognized as a high-potential export destination for Thailand.

Arada Fuangthong stated that the project aims to enhance the capabilities of Thai rice SMEs, enabling them to connect with international markets and effectively export their products. The campaign also focuses on raising awareness of the quality, standards, diversity, and safety of Thai rice, thereby boosting consumer confidence globally and stimulating demand.

The roadshow will feature participation from 28 Thai rice SMEs and representatives from the Thai Rice Exporters Association. Activities will include product exhibitions, business matching sessions with Chinese importers, and opportunities for attendees to sample various Thai rice dishes, such as pineapple fried rice and mango sticky rice, to promote Thai culinary culture.

Guangzhou was chosen as the event location due to its status as a major consumer hub for rice in China and a key import center. Approximately 80% of Thai rice exports to China pass through Guangdong province, making it a strategic gateway for expanding Thai rice market access.

Additionally, the Department of Foreign Trade plans to leverage soft power strategies to promote Thai rice both offline and online. This includes partnerships with Thai SELECT restaurants in Guangzhou, where consumers can enjoy special dishes made with Thai rice and enter a raffle for prizes, including round-trip tickets to Bangkok.

China remains a vital market for Thai rice exports, with an average annual export volume of 440,000 to 750,000 tons over recent years, accounting for 12-27% of China's total rice imports. In the first five months of 2023, Thailand exported rice to China, making it the fifth-largest rice export market for Thailand, following South Africa, the United States, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

This initiative not only aims to broaden market access for Thai rice SMEs but also seeks to enhance the image of Thai rice as a premium product, creating added commercial value and establishing a sustainable growth foundation for Thai rice producers in the Chinese market, which is considered a strategic long-term target for Thailand.
