Thailand and China Establish 2+2 Dialogue for Enhanced Cooperation

Thailand and China have agreed to establish a new 2+2 dialogue mechanism that will bring together their foreign and defense ministers, a move aimed at deepening strategic cooperation in security, trade, technology, and regional connectivity. This agreement was reached during talks between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Beijing, as reported by the Thai Prime Minister's Office.

During the discussions, Premier Li expressed China's readiness to strengthen mutual political trust and expand practical cooperation with Thailand. The new dialogue mechanism is expected to enhance coordination on foreign and security policy, with Thailand offering to host the inaugural meeting. Both countries also expressed a commitment to combat transnational crime through improved intelligence sharing and collaboration against online scams and financial fraud.

Prime Minister Anutin highlighted the importance of Thailand's relationship with China, reaffirming the country's dedication to expanding cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, infrastructure, and technology. He specifically called for increased Chinese imports of Thai agricultural products and processed food, while also welcoming high-quality Chinese investments. The leaders also discussed the ongoing development of the Thailand-China high-speed railway, with a commitment to complete the first phase by 2030.

In addition to security and trade, the two nations agreed to collaborate in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, the digital economy, health technology, nuclear energy, and quantum technology. Following the talks, 15 agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed, covering areas such as higher education, industry, supply chains, and public health.

China remains Thailand's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding $40 billion in the first quarter of the year, reflecting a more than 20% increase from the previous year, according to the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok. Furthermore, China has been the largest export market for Thai agricultural products for 13 consecutive years. Tourism also plays a significant role in the bilateral relationship, with approximately 2.65 million Chinese visitors traveling to Thailand by early July.

This year marks the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, which were established in 1975. The recent agreement to launch the 2+2 dialogue mechanism is seen as a significant step in reinforcing the longstanding ties between the two countries.
