Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recently met with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk to advance discussions on the Thai-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This initiative aims to enhance trade and cooperation in agriculture, energy, and technology between Thailand and Russia.

The meeting took place during Overchuk's visit to Thailand for the annual meeting of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Both parties expressed optimism about the potential for increased trade, especially as they prepare to celebrate 130 years of diplomatic relations in 2027. They acknowledged that the current trade volume, which stood at about $1.19 billion in the first nine months of 2024, does not fully reflect the potential for growth, particularly in agricultural products.

According to the Thai Ministry of Commerce, there is significant room for expanding exports of Thai agricultural products, such as rice, to Russia. The Thai government is encouraging Russian investments in sectors where Russia has expertise, including technology and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Phoj Aramwatananont, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of the Thai-EAEU FTA, noting that it would open new markets for Thai goods and services while providing access to essential raw materials and technology for Thai industries. He said Russia is not only a crucial market for Thailand but also serves as a gateway to the larger EAEU market, which comprises more than 180 million people.

During discussions, both sides also emphasized the importance of cooperation in clean energy and the potential transfer of small modular reactor (SMR) technology from Russia to Thailand. This aligns with Thailand's broader strategy to enhance its energy security and transition towards sustainable energy sources.

In addition to the FTA discussions, Thai and Russian officials are preparing for the upcoming Russian-Thai Investment Forum scheduled for October 29–31, 2026, in Bangkok, which aims to facilitate business interactions between the two nations. The forum will provide a platform for Thai businesses to engage with Russian counterparts and explore investment opportunities.

Trade between Thailand and Russia has shown signs of growth, with projections suggesting it could reach about $2.2 billion by the end of 2024. However, both sides agree that further efforts are needed to realize the full potential of their economic partnership.

As Thailand positions itself as a strategic hub in the region, the government is also advancing infrastructure projects like the Land Bridge initiative to enhance logistics capabilities, creating further opportunities for Russian investors.
