Thai SMEs Target Hong Kong Market with Ambitious Trade Goals

The Thai government is actively promoting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to expand their reach into the Hong Kong market. This initiative is spearheaded by the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP) in collaboration with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

According to OSMEP, the strategy is part of a broader effort to leverage the ASEAN-Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement (FTA), positioning Hong Kong as a crucial gateway to the Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China. This area is recognized for its high consumption of imported goods, with Hong Kong relying on imports for about 90% of its products. Thai goods accounted for 58.4% of this import value, highlighting the significant opportunity for Thai SMEs, particularly in the fresh and processed food sectors.

During a recent hybrid workshop titled “Enhancing ASEAN SME Competitiveness in the Hong Kong Market through Digital Platforms,” OSMEP emphasized the importance of adapting product standards to meet Hong Kong’s regulations and improving product information in Chinese. The workshop included participation from SMEs across Thailand and ASEAN, showcasing a commitment to enhancing competitiveness through digital commerce.

Witthawat Lamsam, Deputy Director of OSMEP, noted that the initiative is designed to help Thai SMEs navigate the complexities of entering international markets, particularly through e-commerce platforms like JD.com, Tmall, and Taobao, which are pivotal for reaching consumers directly.

In addition to these efforts, OSMEP is also managing the “ASEAN Access” website, a central resource for entrepreneurs to access knowledge and strategies for international business. This platform is part of a comprehensive plan to support SMEs in their journey toward globalization.

Hong Kong’s economic landscape is characterized by a robust SME sector, which constitutes over 98% of all businesses and employs approximately 45% of the private workforce, according to the Hong Kong government. The local government has implemented various support measures, including financial assistance and business advisory services, to bolster the growth of SMEs.

As Thai SMEs prepare to enter this competitive market, the collaboration between OSMEP and HKTDC is seen as a strategic move to enhance the visibility and viability of Thai products in Hong Kong and beyond. This partnership aims not only to promote trade but also to foster long-term relationships between Thai businesses and their Hong Kong counterparts.
