Thailand's Air Force Advances Gripen Fighter Jet Procurement

BANGKOK – The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) is moving forward with the second phase of its Gripen fighter jet procurement project, as confirmed by Air Force chief ACM Seksan Khantha on October 12. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to bolster Thailand's defense capabilities against potential threats, with funding allocated in the fiscal 2027 budget.

ACM Seksan emphasized the ongoing necessity for manned fighter aircraft, stating that critical decisions in complex situations still require human judgment, particularly in life-and-death scenarios. He noted that personnel would be trained to operate increasingly sophisticated technologies to enhance decision-making effectiveness. The RTAF aims to ensure that the quality and number of aircraft are adequate to protect Thailand's sovereignty.

“The project is not just about acquiring aircraft, but an investment in the nation's security and long-term air sovereignty.”ACM Seksan Khantha, Air Force Chief (paraphrased)

The procurement project is expected to include technology transfers, personnel training, and infrastructure development, preparing the country to defend its airspace effectively. The RTAF anticipates receiving the Gripen aircraft from this second phase in 2029.

In the first phase of the procurement, the RTAF has contracted for three Gripen E (single-seat) and one Gripen F (two-seat) fighter jets, with a total budget of 19,500 million THB. This initial phase is part of a comprehensive ten-year plan to replace aging F-16 aircraft, which have been in service for more than 37 years. The RTAF is committed to ensuring that taxpayer funds are utilized transparently and effectively, as stated by the Air Force spokesperson.

Saab, the manufacturer of the Gripen jets, has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the delivery of four Gripen E/F aircraft to Thailand, with deliveries scheduled from 2025 to 2030. This contract includes a long-term offset package valued at over 100,000 million THB, or 154.6% of the project value, involving significant technology transfers and industrial cooperation with Thailand, fostering new investments across various sectors of the national economy.

Analysts note that the Gripen E/F jets are equipped with advanced capabilities, including AESA radar and beyond-visual-range (BVR) missile systems like the Meteor, making them suitable for modern combat scenarios. The RTAF's decision to procure these aircraft aligns with its strategic goal of developing a robust and efficient air force capable of safeguarding national sovereignty.
