Nissan Aims to Reclaim Leadership in Philippine Automotive Market
The Japanese automaker is focusing on electrification and dealership expansion to regain its status as the leading car brand in the Philippines.

Japanese automobile manufacturer Nissan is making strategic moves to reclaim its status as the leading automotive brand in the Philippines, a position it previously held before facing significant challenges. The company is banking on the introduction of new electrified models, an enhanced customer experience, and an expanded dealership network to drive long-term growth.
Masao Tsutsumi, who will officially take over as President of Nissan Philippines on April 1, 2025, emphasized the company's commitment to the local market. He addressed concerns regarding the brand's future by stating that the company is here to stay. Tsutsumi, who has over two decades of experience in various sectors, is focused on familiarizing himself with local operations and addressing the challenges the company faces.

To bolster its presence, Nissan has inaugurated a new full-service dealership in Valencia City, Bukidnon, which is part of its strategy to enhance accessibility for customers in Northern Mindanao. This facility offers a comprehensive range of services, including sales, maintenance, and spare parts, reflecting Nissan's commitment to providing a seamless customer experience. Jefferson Rolida, Dealer Principal of Nissan Cagayan de Oro Distributors Inc., highlighted the importance of this expansion, stating that the opening of Nissan Bukidnon reflects their continued commitment to expanding Nissan's footprint across Mindanao.
Despite these positive developments, Nissan is also undergoing a restructuring process aimed at becoming a leaner and more profitable organization. This includes potential factory closures and a focus on cash flow management. Tsutsumi indicated that 2025 would be a challenging year for the brand, with limited product launches planned. However, from 2026 onwards, Nissan intends to ramp up its activities with three to four model launches annually, including popular models such as the Navara and Terra.

Nissan's efforts align with a push by the Philippine government to enhance local electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing capabilities, which includes a $1 billion subsidy program aimed at attracting foreign investments in the sector. This aligns with Nissan's strategy to introduce electrified models to the market, as the company seeks to adapt to changing consumer preferences and regulatory environments.
As Nissan navigates these challenges, industry analysts are closely watching its moves in the Philippine market, particularly its ability to leverage new technologies and expand its dealership network to regain its competitive edge in Southeast Asia.
