Atelier Betismo: A New Hub for Art and Community in Pateros

In the tranquil enclave of Huntahang Pateros, Atelier Betismo emerges as a unique art space, founded by Roberto Cruz Yumul, affectionately known as Uncle Bob. Rather than retreating into a life of leisure, Uncle Bob has dedicated the past year to establishing a collective that not only showcases art but also fosters community spirit.

Uncle Bob's journey as a painter began merely nine months ago, yet his work has already garnered attention, with hotel owners in Mexico purchasing his pieces to enrich their interiors. His return to the Philippines was inspired by a dream in which his mother urged him to reconnect with his roots. This personal revelation has shaped his vision for Atelier Betismo, which he describes as a “home for ideas, memory and shared making.”

A notable example is their interpretation of Claude Monet’s Sunflowers, where the interplay of light and color is enhanced by the structural complexity of wire.

In February, during the National Arts Month, the local government of Pateros, led by Mayor Gerald German, collaborated with Atelier Betismo to provide free art workshops. These workshops aim to discover and nurture the next generation of artists in Pateros, offering materials and mentorship to participants, thereby eliminating financial barriers. Uncle Bob emphasizes that these workshops are about more than just technique; they are a means of allowing participants to express their surroundings through art.
