Lao Youth Footballers Shine with International Titles Amid World Cup Excitement

As the FIFA World Cup captivates football fans worldwide, young athletes from Laos are making headlines of their own. The W.I.G NAGA football club's under-13 team recently defended its title at the IberCup in Portugal, defeating GD Estoril Praia 4-2 in the final. This victory marks a significant achievement for Laos, as it continues to build its reputation in youth football.

In addition to the under-13 team's success, the club's under-10 team also triumphed in the MIC Football 7 tournament held in Spain in mid-June. These accomplishments during a single European tour have sparked excitement among supporters back home, with a warm welcome awaiting the players upon their return to Vientiane.

“We are proud to represent Laos. Many people there knew very little about Laos.”Tonjukkit Noysomsy, coach

Coach Tonjukkit Noysomsy expressed pride in the team's performance, noting the challenges they faced. He stated that they knew it would be very difficult and that they never underestimated any opponent. He mentioned that they prepared for a long time through training, studying matches, and analysing replays. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, highlighting the bond that has developed among the players over the years, stating that these boys have been together for five or six years and they fight for each other because they are friends.

While the trophies are a source of pride, Tonjukkit explained that the club's mission goes beyond winning. He noted that they don’t only teach technical skills; the most important thing is that the players enjoy football, enjoy playing together, and learn how to be good teammates. The long-term goal is to nurture quality players who can represent Laos on the international stage.

“I feel really happy that we defended our title.”Niou, right winger

The team is already gearing up for its next challenge, an international tournament in Shanghai, where they will compete against teams from Spain, Japan, and South Korea. Tonjukkit added that they will train hard and make sure they’re fully prepared, stating that W.I.G NAGA will never stop developing and will keep fighting.

“We didn’t think this many people would come. I’m very thankful.”Nino, center-back

The players themselves shared their excitement about the recent victories. Right winger Niou expressed his happiness about defending their title, while teammate Nino, a center-back, noted the unexpected support they received at the airport, stating that they didn’t think this many people would come and that he was very thankful.

Looking ahead, W.I.G NAGA is expected to participate in more international competitions in the United States, Brazil, and Italy, furthering their journey in the world of youth football.
