Laos Attracts Over $8.5 Billion in Investment in Early 2026

Laos has seen a remarkable surge in investment, attracting over USD 8.5 billion in approvals during the first seven months of 2026. This figure represents a 68 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to officials at the recent Investment Promotion and Management Committee conference held in Vientiane from August 11 to 12.

Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith highlighted that since Laos opened to private investment in 1989, the country has approved 5,394 domestic and foreign investment projects, totaling approximately USD 65.5 billion. He noted that domestic investments in controlled and concessionary business activities account for about 23 percent of this total.

China continues to be the leading foreign investor in Laos, with 970 projects valued at around USD 15 billion. Vietnam follows with 441 projects worth USD 12.7 billion, and Thailand has invested in 686 projects totaling USD 6.9 billion. Japan is also expanding its presence, with over 160 companies now operating in Laos through direct investments and regional supply chains.

In a notable development, Laos and Japan recently revised their grant aid agreement for the Wattay International Airport improvement project, increasing funding to JPY 3.863 billion (approximately USD 26.5 million), building on an upgrade project that commenced in May 2026.
