Laos-Vietnam Economic Ties Strengthen with Trade and Energy Growth

Trade between Laos and Vietnam has surged, reaching USD 1.305 billion during the first six months of 2026. This growth is attributed to increasing cross-border trade, tourism, and infrastructure projects, according to the Lao Department of Foreign Trade.

Laos primarily exports gold, potassium chloride, and electrical machinery and parts to Vietnam, while importing diesel fuel, vehicles, and chemical products. Officials from both countries recently convened in Luang Prabang for the 6th Meeting of the Laos-Vietnam Border Joint Technical Committee, where they emphasized the importance of regular coordination between border authorities in maintaining stability and promoting local economic development.

During the first half of 2026, border forces conducted 60 joint patrols involving 1,716 personnel. They also inspected border markers affected by natural disasters and discussed improvements to boundary management. A seminar is planned for village leaders in Savannakhet Province later this September to enhance cooperation between border communities.

Energy exports are becoming increasingly significant in the Laos-Vietnam relationship. In the first quarter of 2026, Laos exported a record 2.92 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity to Vietnam, marking a nearly 120 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This rise is driven by Vietnam's growing demand for imported power.

Vietnam has approved electricity imports from 47 Lao power projects with a combined capacity exceeding 8,260 megawatts (MW). Currently, projects with a total installed capacity of 2,379 MW are already exporting electricity to Vietnam, up from approximately 1,700 MW a year earlier. In May 2026, Laos signed a concession agreement for the 80 MW Xekaman 4 Hydropower Project in Sekong Province, with all generated electricity designated for export to Vietnam. More hydropower and renewable energy projects are expected to come online in the coming years, further enhancing cross-border electricity trade.

Tourism and transport cooperation between the two nations is also on the rise. Vietnam has become Laos' third-largest source of international visitors, with 586,190 arrivals in the first half of 2026, accounting for 22.6 percent of all foreign tourists. Additionally, Vietnam is investing in closer transport links, including the construction of the Vinh–Thanh Thuy Expressway, a 60-kilometre highway connecting Nghe An Province to the Lao border. This road will be part of the planned Vientiane-Hanoi Expressway, aimed at improving travel and trade efficiency between the two countries.
