Chinese Automakers Introduce Hybrid Vehicles in Indonesia Amid Infrastructure Challenges
Chinese brands BYD, Chery, and DFSK launch plug-in hybrids at a major auto show, reflecting a shift in Indonesia's electric vehicle market.

TANGERANG, Indonesia — Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, including BYD, Chery, and DFSK, have introduced their first plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show, which runs from July 30 to August 9. This move comes as the companies navigate uncertainties surrounding government subsidies and the limited availability of charging stations in the country.
At the auto show, BYD showcased its new PHEV models, which are designed to address the current infrastructure limitations that have hindered the growth of fully electric vehicles in Indonesia. Analysts suggest that the shift towards hybrids represents a response to local conditions, where charging facilities are still sparse.
Chery's sub-brand Jetour also unveiled its hybrid offerings at the event, marking a significant entry into the Indonesian market. The company aims to tap into the growing demand for more versatile vehicle options that can operate on both electric and gasoline power, thus appealing to a broader range of consumers.
Officials from the Indonesian automotive industry have noted that while there is a push for electric vehicles, the transition has been slow. The government has set ambitious targets for EV adoption, but many consumers remain hesitant due to concerns over charging infrastructure and the initial costs associated with electric vehicles. As a result, hybrids are seen as a transitional solution that can bridge the gap.
As the Indonesian government continues to promote electric mobility, the introduction of hybrid models may serve to alleviate some consumer concerns while paving the way for future investments in charging infrastructure. The success of these vehicles will largely depend on how effectively manufacturers can address the local market's unique challenges.
