Vietnam's EVFTA Marks Four Years of Strengthened Trade Relations with the European Union

Since August 1, 2020, Vietnam and the European Union (EU) have been connected through the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which has enhanced trade ties and facilitated market access for Vietnamese goods.

The EVFTA has contributed to Vietnam becoming the largest ASEAN exporter to the EU in goods. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, trade between Vietnam and EU member states reached approximately $72.3 billion in 2023, a decrease of 5.3% compared to 2022. The trade surplus stood at $34.3 billion, with significant exports in agriculture, seafood, and textiles, which have all seen substantial growth since the agreement's implementation.

Exports of seafood to the EU increased by 29.5%, while textile exports rose by 43.4% in 2022, reflecting the agreement's positive impact on key industries.

The Vietnamese government has been revising legal frameworks related to import-export regulations, investment, and intellectual property rights to align with the commitments outlined in the EVFTA. This effort aims to help Vietnamese businesses maximize the benefits of the agreement and compete effectively in the EU market.

Trade analysts note that the EVFTA has solidified Vietnam's position as a key player in global supply chains, with ongoing efforts needed to address challenges to fully capitalize on trade opportunities.

Overall, the EVFTA represents a significant step in Vietnam's trade relations with the EU, unlocking new opportunities for Vietnamese exporters and enhancing economic cooperation between the two regions.
