Sembcorp's Potential IPO of Indian Renewable Unit Remains Uncertain

Sembcorp Industries, a Singapore-based energy and urban development firm, has responded to recent media speculation regarding a potential initial public offering (IPO) of its Indian renewable energy unit, Sembcorp Green Infra. The company clarified that no definitive decision has been made, emphasizing that evaluations of strategic options, including an IPO, remain preliminary.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Sembcorp could be preparing to file for an IPO that could raise as much as US$500 million, with draft documents potentially submitted as early as August. However, Sembcorp reiterated in a bourse filing that there is no assurance that such a transaction will proceed or be completed.

The company is reportedly collaborating with several financial institutions, including Axis Capital, HSBC, Citigroup, Kotak Mahindra Capital, ICICI Securities, and IIFL Capital Services, on the proposed share sale. If successful, this would mark Sembcorp Green Infra's second attempt at a public listing; its first attempt in 2018 was withdrawn after the company decided to inject additional equity into the business.

Sembcorp Green Infra is recognized as one of India’s ten largest independent power producers in the renewable sector, boasting over 75 renewable energy assets across 18 states, with a total gross capacity of 7.6 gigawatts (GW) installed and under development.

In its recent results briefing, Sembcorp highlighted India as a key growth market for its renewables business, despite anticipating headwinds. The company expects contributions from newly installed capacity, particularly in India, to bolster its performance. In December 2025, Sembcorp announced the completion of the acquisition of Indian solar power company ReNew Sun Bright through its Green Infra unit, further solidifying its commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

As the situation develops, Sembcorp has urged shareholders and investors to exercise caution when trading its securities and to refrain from placing undue reliance on media reports or speculation regarding the potential IPO until a definitive announcement is made.
