Sasseur REIT Targets Southeast Asia for Growth Beyond China

Sasseur Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), which has primarily focused on outlet malls in China since its listing on the Singapore Exchange eight years ago, is setting its sights on Southeast Asia for its next phase of growth. The REIT aims to diversify its portfolio by exploring small to mid-sized opportunities in markets such as Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Cheng Hsing Yuen, CEO of the manager, expressed aspirations for Sasseur REIT to become an international outlet platform within the next three to five years. "My hope is that within the next three to five years, we can really internationalise Sasseur REIT – meaning it is no longer just a China-focused outlet platform, but an international one across this region," Cheng stated, highlighting the potential for growth in Southeast Asia.

The decision to expand is informed by several factors, including an expanding middle class, rising tourist arrivals from China, and a growing influx of Chinese brands into the region. These elements are seen as key drivers for retail and real estate markets in Southeast Asia, which are increasingly attracting foreign investments.

According to analysts, the region's economic landscape is becoming more favorable for investments in retail real estate, with countries like Indonesia and Vietnam showing robust growth potential. The increasing consumer spending power in these markets is expected to support the viability of outlet malls and similar retail formats.

As Sasseur REIT looks to broaden its horizons, it joins a growing number of companies seeking to tap into Southeast Asia's dynamic markets. This trend aligns with broader regional efforts to enhance economic resilience and attract foreign investments, as noted by Singapore's Minister Chan Chun Sing in previous discussions about ASEAN's economic strategies.
