Philippines Advances Quantum Education with Nationwide Roadshow

The Quantum Roadshow Philippines culminated yesterday, August 21, at the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), marking the end of a five-day initiative that commenced at Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila and continued at Bulacan State University. This event, spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), was designed as a precursor to the upcoming Quantum Information, Science and Technology Conference (QISTCon), scheduled for November 9-11 in Cebu City.

During the roadshow, organizers conducted an education gap analysis aimed at informing a national white paper that will guide future initiatives in quantum education and research. The opening event at Letran focused on three pivotal areas: quantum engineering education and research, the development of quantum supply chains in Asia, and advancements in quantum internet technologies.

The discussions included a panel on the Philippine quantum landscape and a workshop that scrutinized existing gaps in quantum education. Quantum technologies leverage the unique properties of matter and light, which are not accessible to traditional computing and communication systems. According to analysts, quantum computing holds the potential to solve problems beyond the capabilities of classical computers, while quantum communications could introduce innovative methods for secure data transmission.

Notably, Bobby Corpus, President of the Quantum Computing Society of the Philippines, emphasized that the country could effectively engage in the emerging quantum economy by cultivating expertise in quantum software, algorithms, cybersecurity, and communications, rather than focusing solely on the capital-intensive development of quantum hardware.

The roadshow also examined the critical issue of quantum supply chains, which has gained prominence as governments strive to establish domestic capabilities in quantum hardware and supporting technologies. Quantum computing necessitates specialized components, including advanced control electronics and precision measurement equipment. Thus, building a competitive ecosystem extends beyond developing quantum processors; it requires universities and industries capable of providing the necessary research, engineering, and technical talent.

Furthermore, the communications segment of the roadshow explored the development of quantum networks and the potential for quantum internet technologies, which are anticipated to complement existing communications infrastructure. Applications of these technologies include quantum key distribution and establishing connections between quantum computers and sensors.

The initiative brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including researchers, educators, government scientists, and industry representatives, to discuss quantum engineering education, research, supply chains, and quantum communications. The DOST has been actively involved in quantum research across several universities and government institutions, although it currently lags behind regional counterparts in countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.
