Myanmar's Regime Reshuffles Cabinet: Yar Pyae Takes Defence Role

In a significant cabinet reshuffle, Myanmar's military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, appointed Yar Pyae as the new Minister for Defence on October 11. Yar Pyae, who previously chaired the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC), takes over from Tun Aung, who has been reassigned to the role of Minister for Digital Development and Communications.

Yar Pyae's appointment comes shortly after he led a workshop in Naypyidaw on October 15-16, commemorating the 11th anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA). During this event, he emphasized the need for a democratic federal union, lawful resource extraction, and a unified peace process in Myanmar. His previous roles included Minister for Border Affairs and Home Affairs, as well as national security advisor since the military coup on February 1, 2021, which overthrew the democratically elected government.

In addition to Yar Pyae's appointment, the reshuffle included the replacement of Soe Win as Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement by retired military doctor Ko Ko Lwin. Soe Win now serves as Minister for Health, following the retirement of Thet Khaing Win. Both Ko Ko Lwin and Soe Win are reported to be trusted confidants of Min Aung Hlaing.

This cabinet change is part of a broader trend of restructuring within the military government, which has expanded the number of ministries from 25, under the ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) administration, to 31 since Min Aung Hlaing assumed power. The recent appointments signal the regime's ongoing efforts to consolidate control and address various governance challenges amid a backdrop of political turmoil and civil unrest in the country.
