PLN Secures Additional Coal Supply to Enhance Java's Electricity Reliability
PT PLN (Persero) will receive an extra 16.8 million tons of coal by 2026, aiming to boost electricity capacity and prevent blackouts.

PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, has announced a significant increase in coal supply, securing an additional 16.8 million tons by the end of 2026. This move aims to bolster the electricity generation capacity of its coal-fired power plants (PLTU) in response to recent supply challenges.
Rizal Calvary, PLN's Director of Generation Management, stated that this additional supply will help optimize the company's electricity output, potentially adding 5 gigawatts (GW) to the existing capacity. "This increase is crucial for ensuring the stability of the electricity system in Java, Madura, and Bali (Jamali)," he noted during a meeting at the Indonesian House of Representatives.

The additional coal will be sourced through the optimization of existing contracts and reallocating coal that was previously designated for export. PLN's management is currently coordinating with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to ensure smooth distribution of the coal supply. "We are committed to monitoring our primary energy stock daily to maintain operational safety levels," Rizal added.
According to PLN's President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, the company will receive 1.8 million tons of coal in July 2026, followed by 3 million tons per month from August to December 2026. This supply is specifically for coal with a calorific value above 4,500 kcal/kg, which is essential for maintaining reliable electricity generation in Java.
“This additional supply will enhance our capacity by approximately 5 GW, increasing our total supply capacity from 35.9 GW.”Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director, PLN
"This additional supply will enhance our capacity by approximately 5 GW, increasing our total supply capacity from 35.9 GW," Darmawan explained during a hearing with the Commission XII of the House. He acknowledged the recent challenges faced in electricity supply due to shifts in national coal production, where low-calorific coal production increased while medium to high-calorific coal production decreased.
To address this issue, the ESDM Ministry and PLN have adjusted their strategy to ensure a steady supply of medium to high-calorific coal, which is vital for electricity generation. This proactive approach aims to prevent future blackouts and enhance the reliability of the electricity system across Java.
