BNPB Accelerates Temporary Housing for NTT Earthquake Survivors
The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency is ramping up efforts to provide temporary housing for those affected by the recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Nusa Tenggara Timur.

The Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB), Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, is intensifying its efforts to build temporary housing (hunian sementara or huntara) for survivors of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) in September 2026. This earthquake has severely impacted seven districts, leading to significant damage and displacement.
According to BNPB officials, the construction of huntara is being conducted in phases to ensure that affected families can move into habitable shelters as soon as possible. Suharyanto, the head of BNPB, emphasized that the approach is flexible and tailored to the geographical conditions and immediate needs of the survivors. He stated that the construction of huntara is adjusted based on the conditions and needs in the field, while adhering to applicable technical standards after inspecting the construction sites in Ngada, NTT.

As of September 28, 2026, BNPB reported progress in the construction of temporary housing across various districts. In Ngada, six independent huntara units have been completed, with additional units under construction. The agency has also finalized five units of in-situ housing, while 272 other units are in various stages of completion. In total, 110 units are being built in Manggarai, with 50 units progressing beyond 50% completion.
Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of BNPB's Data, Information, and Communication Center, noted that the construction is based on verified data of beneficiaries established by local governments. He explained that before construction begins, BNPB collaborates with local authorities to socialize the initiative with the affected communities.

The government is offering two options for residents whose homes were severely damaged: financial assistance through Dana Tunggu Hunian (DTH) or temporary housing. Most affected individuals have opted for the latter, indicating a strong community preference for immediate shelter solutions.
As the reconstruction efforts continue, the BNPB is committed to maintaining transparency and accuracy in identifying beneficiaries, ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need. This approach reflects Indonesia's emphasis on gotong royong (communal cooperation) and consensus-building, as local communities and authorities work together to navigate the challenges of recovery.
