Death Toll Rises to 47 Following 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Eastern Indonesia
A powerful earthquake has devastated parts of East Nusa Tenggara, leading to significant casualties and damage.

On August 15, 2026, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia, resulting in at least 47 confirmed deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure. The quake occurred at 4:58 AM local time, with its epicenter located approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Nagekeo, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the fatalities were concentrated in several regencies: 24 in Manggarai, 17 in East Manggarai, three in Sikka, and one each in Ngada and Ende. In addition to the fatalities, many individuals were injured, and rescue teams are actively working to evacuate and treat the wounded.

In terms of structural damage, the BNPB noted that 157 houses were severely damaged, while 41 were moderately damaged and 148 lightly affected. Public facilities were also hit hard, with 87 educational institutions, 18 health facilities, five places of worship, and six government offices sustaining damage. The earthquake's impact extended beyond NTT, with tremors felt as far away as South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi, prompting evacuations in those areas as well.
In response to the disaster, the BNPB has mobilized aid, sending food and essential supplies to the affected regions. As of the latest reports, 50,000 aid packages weighing a total of 275 tons are being dispatched, with 10,500 packages already delivered from Jakarta.
Initially, a tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake, with potential wave heights estimated between 0.5 and 3 meters. However, this warning was lifted after approximately two and a half hours, as no significant tsunami activity was detected. The BMKG confirmed that the earthquake was caused by back-arc thrust activity in the Flores Sea, a region known for its seismic activity due to its location along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'.

Following the earthquake, authorities reported that landslides had obstructed access to some communities, complicating rescue efforts. Approximately 2,000 individuals have been displaced, with many seeking shelter in safer locations. The BNPB is prioritizing the restoration of essential services, including electricity and communication, which were disrupted by the quake.
As the situation continues to evolve, the BNPB and local authorities are closely monitoring aftershocks, which have already numbered over 100, including several significant tremors. The community response has highlighted the importance of gotong royong (communal cooperation) in recovery efforts, as local leaders and residents come together to support one another in the aftermath of this disaster.
