On October 6, 2026, Vingroup, one of Vietnam's largest conglomerates, entered into a partnership with French rail technology leader Alstom to produce 200 new-generation autonomous metro trains for Hanoi. This agreement is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing Vietnam's urban rail capabilities and reducing reliance on foreign technology.

The contract stipulates that Alstom will design and manufacture 83 of the five-car Metropolis trains at its Valenciennes Petite-Foreet facility in France. The remaining 117 trains will be assembled in Vietnam by Vingroup, utilizing components supplied by Alstom. This collaboration includes a technology transfer agreement, which will enable Vingroup to develop local assembly capabilities.

“This agreement is a major milestone for Alstom in one of the fastest-growing mobility markets in the world.”Martin Sion, CEO of Alstom

According to Martin Sion, CEO of Alstom, this partnership marks a significant milestone in the development of Vietnam's urban rail sector. He noted that by combining Alstom's global expertise with Vingroup's industrial strength and long-term vision, they are creating a unique partnership that supports both the expansion of Hanoi’s metro network and the development of local rail capabilities.

The new trains will feature advanced design elements aimed at improving operational efficiency and passenger safety. The use of aluminum alloys in the train bodies will reduce weight, thus saving energy and minimizing track wear. Furthermore, these trains will operate autonomously at the highest level of automation, known as GoA4, which is fully driverless.

Nguyen Viet Quang, Vice Chairman and CEO of Vingroup, emphasized the strategic importance of this agreement in the context of the company's broader infrastructure development goals. He stated that the partnership with Alstom will create an opportunity for Vietnam to access and progressively develop capabilities in advanced rail technologies. He highlighted that this initiative aligns with Vingroup's strategy to establish infrastructure as a key business pillar.

The Hanoi urban rail network is projected to expand significantly, with plans to reach 979 kilometers and include 18 lines by 2045, as outlined in the city’s long-term development plan. This expansion is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Vingroup's involvement in the metro project is facilitated through its subsidiary, Vinhomes, which acts as the general contractor for the Hanoi metro system. This partnership with Alstom is part of a broader trend where Vingroup is diversifying its portfolio and strengthening its position in the rail sector, following a recent agreement with Siemens Mobility for high-speed rail development.
