Starlink Launches Satellite Internet Service in Vietnam

Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, has officially launched in Vietnam, marking a significant entry into the country's telecommunications market. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Starlink has been granted a five-year license to provide satellite internet services, which includes both fixed and mobile satellite communication capabilities.

The initial phase of Starlink's deployment will feature four gateway stations and a capacity for up to 600,000 user terminals, as reported by the Telecommunications Department. This rollout aims to enhance internet connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved areas where traditional internet infrastructure is lacking.

Vietnam's government has been increasingly open to foreign investment in the telecommunications sector, as seen in the decision to waive foreign ownership limits for Starlink's operations. This move aligns with the country's broader strategy to improve its digital infrastructure and ensure that internet access is not hindered by geographical challenges.

Starlink's service is particularly relevant for regions that are difficult to reach with conventional internet cables, including mountainous areas and islands. The system utilizes low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which operate at altitudes of around 550 kilometers, significantly reducing latency and improving service quality for applications such as remote work and emergency communications.

According to the Telecommunications Department, the introduction of satellite internet is expected to complement existing ground infrastructure, providing a vital backup during natural disasters when terrestrial networks may fail. This capability is crucial for Vietnam, which frequently faces typhoons and flooding.

Experts have noted that Starlink's technology could rapidly cover areas with poor signal reception. As of now, Starlink has already established a presence in 125 countries, serving approximately five million users worldwide. The company aims to expand its reach further, providing high-speed internet access to those in need, especially in regions where traditional services are unavailable.
