Quang Tri's Dual Airport Strategy: Enhancing International Connectivity
Quang Tri province aims to develop two airports to boost regional logistics and international charter flights.

Quang Tri province is advancing its development plan by focusing on the simultaneous operation of two airports, aiming to improve connectivity and stimulate growth in the region, according to local officials.
The Quang Tri Airport project, located in Gio Linh district, has a total investment of nearly 5,834 billion VND (approximately $246 million) and is planned to be operational by March 2027, according to the provincial chairman. It will cater to both domestic and international flights, improving the province's logistics capabilities and economic competitiveness. The airport is designed to handle up to 5 million passengers and 25,500 tons of cargo annually at full capacity, with earlier phases planned for lower capacities.
“The goal is to bring the airport into operation by March 2027.”Bui Hoang Phuong, Chairman of Quang Tri People's Committee
According to the provincial government, the development of Quang Tri Airport will address the long-standing absence of air transport in the region, which has limited rapid connectivity to major economic centers. Quang Tri has nearly 200 km of coastline and borders Laos and Thailand, which are notable geographic features for logistics and tourism development.
As part of the project, the airport's control tower has reached a significant construction milestone, with ongoing efforts to complete the passenger terminal and other essential infrastructure. Project management and provincial leadership have urged maintaining construction momentum to meet the scheduled opening date.
In addition to the airport, Quang Tri is enhancing transport infrastructure to facilitate access to the new airport. The provincial government plans to allocate approximately 480 billion VND for road improvements connecting the airport to National Route 1 and the nearby expressway, which is expected to bolster transport efficiency and support airport operations.
“This airport will not only fill a transportation gap but also complete the multi-modal infrastructure network.”Quang Tri Provincial Government
Local leaders, including the provincial government, have urged collaboration among various stakeholders to identify and resolve administrative or logistical challenges during the project's execution. They have expressed support for upgrading the airport's classification from 4C to 4E to accommodate larger aircraft and expand operational capacity.
With these developments, Quang Tri aims to attract airlines to establish both domestic and international routes, thereby enhancing air connectivity and promoting local tourism. The provincial government has committed to working closely with investors and relevant agencies to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives.
