Phu Quoc, often referred to as Vietnam's 'pearl island', is undergoing a significant transformation in preparation for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November 2027. The Vietnamese government is investing over $5 billion in various infrastructure projects, including airports, hotels, and event venues, to enhance the island's capacity to host this prestigious international event.
As reported by Nikkei Asia, construction is already underway with cranes and diggers actively reshaping the landscape of Phu Quoc. The island is expected to become a focal point for thousands of delegates from APEC member economies, international organizations, businesses, and media.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has emphasized the urgency of completing key infrastructure projects, which include a new convention center, public squares, and upgraded transportation links. The international airport is also set for expansion, with a total investment of approximately 22 trillion VND (around $930 million), aiming to increase its capacity to 20 million passengers per year by 2026, according to Bao Chinh Phu.
Phu Quoc's selection as the venue for APEC 2027 represents a historic opportunity for the island, which is part of the Kien Giang province. The island's government is proposing over 40 key projects to enhance its infrastructure and service offerings, with a total projected investment surpassing 305 trillion VND (approximately $12.8 billion), as reported by the government’s official portal.
The APEC summit is expected to boost Phu Quoc's profile as a high-quality tourism and service hub, with officials highlighting the potential for economic growth and development. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc noted that APEC 2027 could serve as a strategic catalyst for the island's transformation into a regional and international economic center.
