Meningococcal Disease Outbreak in Ho Chi Minh City: One Student Dies, Two Others Infected
Health authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are on high alert following the death of a 12-year-old student from meningococcal disease, with two additional cases reported.

On October 16, 2026, health authorities in Ho Chi Minh City reported a critical situation involving three students from Hai Ba Trung Secondary School who contracted meningococcal disease, specifically serogroup B. Tragically, one of the students, H.H.K, a 12-year-old, died on October 14 after being diagnosed with severe meningococcal infection and multiple organ failure.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, two other students, N.A.B.M and N.T.H.Q, also 12 years old and classmates of H.H.K, were hospitalized with meningococcal infections. N.A.B.M is currently stable in the Tropical Diseases Hospital, while N.T.H.Q was admitted with symptoms of fever and subsequently tested positive for the disease.
In response to the outbreak, the Department of Health convened an emergency meeting with health experts and the Department of Education and Training to assess the situation and coordinate preventive measures. The authorities have initiated an epidemiological investigation, monitored close contacts, and provided prophylactic antibiotics to those at risk of infection.
“The disease can progress rapidly and could be fatal within 24 hours if not treated promptly.”Dr. Bạch Thị Chính, Medical Director of VNVC Vaccination System
Health officials have emphasized the need for thorough cleaning and disinfection in the school environment, including classrooms and common areas. They are also advising parents and the community to remain calm and follow official health guidelines, avoiding the spread of unverified information.
This outbreak comes amid a concerning trend in Vietnam, where the Ministry of Health reported an increase in meningococcal disease cases in recent months. From January to mid-April 2026, there were 24 reported cases nationwide, with four fatalities, predominantly affecting children under 15 years old, who accounted for 46% of the total cases. This marks a nearly 50% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
“We are prioritizing immediate action to control the outbreak and protect public health.”Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health
Experts warn that meningococcal disease can progress rapidly, with symptoms that can easily be mistaken for common respiratory illnesses. Dr. Bạch Thị Chính, Medical Director of VNVC Vaccination System, highlighted that the disease can lead to severe complications, including meningitis and septicemia, and can be fatal within 24 hours if not treated promptly. The bacteria, Neisseria meningitidis, can spread through respiratory droplets, making close contact a significant risk factor.
As a precaution, health authorities are urging the public, especially those in close contact with the infected students, to be vigilant for symptoms such as fever, headache, and rash, and to seek medical attention immediately if they experience these signs.
Given the rapid progression of meningococcal disease, the government and health officials are prioritizing immediate action to control the outbreak and protect public health.
