Yala Aims to Become a GI Metropolis: Leveraging Local Produce for Economic Growth

Yala province in southern Thailand is actively pursuing the status of a 'GI metropolis', aiming to harness the power of geographical indications (GI) to boost its local economy. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Thai government to utilize unique local products as a form of economic soft power. According to the Ministry of Commerce, the recent registration of the Betong Satsuma orange as a GI product is a key step in this direction.

The Betong Satsuma, known locally as som chogun Betong, is a unique variety of orange that has gained popularity among consumers and tourists alike. It is characterized by its sweet and fragrant flavor, as well as its juicy texture. The registration of this fruit as a GI product is expected to enhance its market value, which has already contributed approximately 167 million baht (around $4.7 million) to local farmers. The Ministry of Commerce has emphasized the importance of protecting and promoting such distinctive local products to create added value and ensure quality control.

Officials from the Ministry noted that the GI registration not only protects local producers but also promotes the cultural identity of the region. The Betong Satsuma is grown in the Betong district, where the climate and soil conditions contribute to its unique characteristics. The fruit has become a popular souvenir for tourists visiting the area, further supporting the local economy.

In addition to the Betong Satsuma, Yala has previously registered other GI products, including the Kluai Hin banana and Yala durian, which have also helped boost local agricultural income. The Thai government aims to expand its GI product portfolio, with a current total of 232 registered GI products nationwide, generating an estimated annual value of over 78 billion baht (approximately $2.2 billion).

As the province continues to develop its identity as a GI metropolis, local officials are encouraging collaboration among farmers and producers to enhance the quality and marketability of their products. This initiative aligns with the government's broader economic policies aimed at strengthening local economies through the promotion of unique regional products.
