USS George H.W. Bush Arrives in Thailand After Middle East Deployment

A second U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, has arrived off the coast of Phuket, Thailand, following a six-month deployment supporting military operations in the Middle East, particularly against Iran. Over 5,100 US Navy personnel from the carrier and accompanying vessels will spend shore leave in Phuket through Friday, according to the Thai government’s Public Relations Department.

The USS George H.W. Bush, which is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 10, is anchored approximately 1.78 nautical miles (3.3 kilometers) from Phuket Deep Sea Port. Phuket is its first port visit since leaving the U.S. in March. During its deployment, the carrier participated in Operation Epic Fury, a military initiative aimed at enforcing a naval blockade in the region amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

Rear Admiral Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, highlighted the exceptional performance of the strike group over the past months, saying the performance and resiliency of the group had been exceptional. He emphasized that the visit to Thailand provides an opportunity for U.S. sailors to engage with Thai culture and strengthen bilateral relations.

This port visit provides a well-earned opportunity for our sailors to rest while reflecting on the professionalism they bring to every mission.Capt Justin Issler, Commanding Officer of USS George H.W. Bush

During their time in Phuket, U.S. sailors will participate in various community activities, including a soccer match with local teams, as part of efforts to foster goodwill and cultural exchange. Capt. Justin Issler, commanding officer of the USS George H.W. Bush, said the port visit would give sailors an opportunity to rest after the deployment while engaging with the local community and strengthening ties with Thai maritime partners. The sailors are permitted to travel around the province but are prohibited from driving or riding as passengers on motorcycles.

This visit follows the arrival of another U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, which docked at Laem Chabang port in early September after a similar deployment in the Middle East. The presence of these carriers in Thailand underscores the U.S.'s commitment to maintaining a robust naval presence in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in light of rising geopolitical tensions.
