OpenAI Plans Major Expansion in Singapore Amid Rising AI Demand
The AI research organization will invest more than US$300 million and create over 200 jobs as it responds to surging interest from startups in the Asia-Pacific region.

OpenAI, the American artificial intelligence research organization, is preparing to invest more than US$300 million in Singapore as part of its strategy to address the increasing demand for AI solutions from startups across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This investment will result in the creation of over 200 roles in the city-state over the next few years, according to Thomas Jeng, OpenAI’s head of startups for APAC.
Jeng noted that the surge in demand has become a significant challenge for his team, which currently consists of more than 10 members. He described the situation as overwhelming, stating that there is so much demand that a lot of his day is spent triaging and re-prioritising. He emphasized the importance of human judgment in managing the influx of inquiries, despite the potential of AI to assist in sorting through communications.
This expansion comes at a time when AI adoption is accelerating among businesses in the region. Analysts at InsideASEAN have previously highlighted how companies are reassessing AI's role in their operations, with many firms reversing layoffs as they recognize the limitations of AI in handling complex tasks. OpenAI's commitment to Singapore reflects a broader trend of tech companies investing in the region to capture the growing market for AI technologies.

Furthermore, the investment is expected to contribute to Singapore's development as a global hub for AI and technology innovation. The city-state has been actively fostering a conducive environment for tech startups, which has attracted significant interest from both local and international players. OpenAI's presence in Singapore is expected to further enhance the local tech ecosystem.
In addition to OpenAI, other tech giants are also ramping up their operations in Singapore. For instance, JPMorgan has adjusted its AI spending strategy to focus on talent acquisition in the region, as reported by InsideASEAN. This trend indicates a growing recognition of Singapore's strategic importance in the global tech landscape.
As OpenAI continues to expand its team and capabilities in Singapore, it will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI applications in the APAC region, catering to the needs of startups eager to leverage AI for their growth.
