Anthropic, GIC, and Macquarie Launch AI Data Centre Venture
The partnership aims to develop AI infrastructure in the U.S., with significant backing from Singapore's GIC and Macquarie Asset Management.

Anthropic, a prominent AI research organization, has formed a strategic partnership with Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC and Macquarie Asset Management to establish Theseus Infrastructure, a venture aimed at developing data centres for AI computing. This collaboration was announced on August 10, with an initial focus on projects in the United States.
GIC and Macquarie have committed to funding a substantial portion of the equity required for each data centre project. In a notable arrangement, Anthropic has pledged to absorb any increases in consumer electricity prices resulting from the operation of these facilities. However, the companies have not disclosed specific financial details regarding the scale or expected expenditure for the data centres.

The urgency to invest in AI infrastructure is underscored by a broader trend, as banks and institutional investors are increasingly backing projects that support AI services, which are anticipated to yield significant economic benefits. This follows a pattern seen among major tech companies that are allocating historic amounts of capital to enhance their data centre capabilities.
Anthropic's move comes as it prepares for a public listing, with plans to invest up to US$50 billion (approximately S$64 billion) in custom data centres across various U.S. locations, including Texas and New York, by 2025. Recently, the company secured a US$35 billion loan to lease computer chips at five data centres, backed by Google, indicating strong institutional confidence in its growth potential.

GIC's involvement with Anthropic is not new; the sovereign fund has previously participated in significant funding rounds for the company, including a US$13 billion round completed in September 2023 and a US$30 billion round earlier in 2024. This trend of investment aligns with GIC's strategy to diversify its portfolio into AI sectors, as reported by InsideASEAN.
As the AI landscape continues to evolve, the collaboration between Anthropic, GIC, and Macquarie reflects a strategic response to the increasing demand for AI capabilities and infrastructure. This venture is part of a larger narrative where financial institutions play a crucial role in funding and facilitating AI projects across Southeast Asia and beyond.
