Philippines Asserts Sovereignty: Calls on China to Cease Territorial Claims
Defense Secretary Teodoro demands China stop illegal activities in the South China Sea, emphasizing the need for sincerity in diplomatic relations.

In a recent press briefing, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. articulated a firm stance against China's territorial claims in the South China Sea, demanding that Beijing cease its illegal activities and demonstrate sincerity in its diplomatic engagements. Teodoro emphasized that the restoration of military-to-military communications is contingent upon China's compliance with international law and a cessation of what he described as predatory actions in the region.
Teodoro's remarks come amid ongoing tensions surrounding China's expansive claims, notably encapsulated in its controversial nine-dash line, which the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations have consistently rejected. He stated, “I mean, even ASEAN does not accept their nine-dash line. I mean that nine-dash line is the biggest fiction and the biggest lie that has been done,” referencing the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated China's claims beyond its maritime entitlements as defined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Despite the suspension of military communications, Teodoro clarified that diplomatic channels remain open, allowing for law enforcement and maritime safety discussions between the Philippine Coast Guard and its Chinese counterpart. However, he expressed skepticism regarding the necessity of military dialogue, citing the lack of joint operations or strategic alignment between the two nations. He reiterated his belief that China has not proven to be a sincere partner, stating, “My decision to do so at least three years ago, I could already see that they were not a sincere partner to talk to on a military level.”

The Philippines has been increasingly vocal in asserting its rights over its exclusive economic zone, particularly following recent confrontations with Chinese vessels. The government has previously rejected China's sovereignty claims over the waters surrounding Batanes, a move that aligns with its broader strategy to uphold national sovereignty in the face of external pressures.
As the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve, analysts suggest that the Philippines' firm position may influence regional dynamics, particularly in light of the ongoing maritime disputes in Southeast Asia. The call for sincerity from China reflects not only a desire for stability but also a commitment to uphold international law as a guiding principle in diplomatic relations.
