Innovative Pulse App Enhances Connectivity for Seafarers
Fleet Management's Pulse app revolutionizes maritime operations by providing seafarers with essential information despite connectivity challenges.

The maritime industry is witnessing a significant technological advancement with the introduction of the Pulse app, developed by Fleet Management. This innovative application consolidates a maritime company's extensive digital infrastructure into a single mobile platform, granting seafarers access to crucial operational and employment information, even in areas with unreliable internet connectivity.
According to Fleet Management, Pulse is powered by their proprietary digital ecosystem, Paris2.0, which encompasses various functions including technical management, crewing, safety, and compliance. The app is designed specifically for seafarers, aiming to simplify their access to information that was previously scattered across multiple systems. The engineering team stated that the app was designed to give seafarers the greatest amount of access and the least amount of effort.
One of the primary challenges faced during the development of Pulse was not merely the technology itself, but rather the management of data and the simplification of processes. The team emphasized the importance of ensuring that the information provided is accurate, accessible, and genuinely useful for seafarers during their employment journey. The app's interface adapts based on the user's current situation, prioritizing relevant information such as travel details and training requirements when preparing to join a vessel, and shifting focus to welfare resources and contract information once onboard.
Given the unique challenges of maritime operations, where connectivity can be intermittent, Pulse was designed with these constraints in mind. The engineering team noted that a successful seafarer app could not assume perfect connectivity because life at sea presents a unique set of challenges compared to most technology products. To address this, Pulse utilizes caching technology, allowing users to access essential information even when connectivity is limited.
Security is also a paramount concern, particularly as the app handles sensitive information such as contracts and personal records. Pulse employs a password-free magic-link authentication system, which enhances security while simplifying the user experience. The engineering team explained that security, performance, and user experience were built into the platform from day one rather than added later.
Currently, Fleet Management has opted to keep Pulse a closed platform, prioritizing the protection of seafarers' personal information. However, the company is open to integrating selected third-party systems that can provide operational benefits without compromising security. Moving forward, Fleet Management envisions Pulse evolving as part of its broader digital transformation strategy, focusing on improving connectivity between ship and shore and enhancing access to vital information throughout a seafarer's career.
