ATI and DP World Enhance Manila South Harbour with New Hybrid Cranes

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, 10 September 2026 – Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) and DP World have jointly commissioned six state-of-the-art hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes at Manila South Harbour (MSH), a move aimed at bolstering the terminal’s operational capacity and environmental sustainability. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize one of the Philippines' key international trade gateways.

The new cranes, manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. (ZPMC), utilize hybrid technology designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered equipment. Equipped with advanced safety features such as automatic gantry steering, emergency stop systems, and anti-sway technology, these cranes are also capable of stacking six containers high, thereby enhancing the terminal's efficiency in cargo handling.

With this latest addition, MSH's RTG fleet has expanded to 29 units, facilitating faster and safer truck turnaround times. This is particularly crucial as the terminal aims to accommodate increasing cargo volumes, having raised its annual container-handling capacity by nearly 40% from 1.45 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2021 to 2 million TEUs by 2025, as reported by various sources.

This investment follows the inauguration of an extended Pier 3 at MSH in early 2025, which introduced two new quay cranes among the largest in the Philippines. The modernization efforts at MSH are part of a sustained program that includes the introduction of 15 fully electric Internal Transfer Vehicles (eITVs) in 2025, supported by quick-charging stations, marking a first for the country. By the end of 2026, the terminal is expected to deploy additional electric equipment, including three electric empty container handlers and two electric reach stackers.
