AboitizPower Breaks Ground on Third Solar Plant in Negros Occidental

ABOITIZ Power Corporation (AboitizPower) has officially begun construction on its Luna solar power plant in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, marking the company's third solar project in the province. The facility is designed to have a capacity of 239 megawatts-peak (MWp) and will incorporate a 65-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS), with plans to become operational by 2028.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Aboitiz Renewables President Jimmy Villaroman expressed the company's commitment to renewable energy, stating that their solar journey began in Negros Occidental with SacaSun, their very first solar plant in San Carlos City. He noted that returning to this island for their third project feels like coming home and added that the decision to invest further in Negros Occidental is strategic, given the region's favorable natural conditions and supportive local policies for clean energy initiatives.

Upon completion, the Luna project will elevate Aboitiz Renewables' total solar capacity in Negros Occidental to 471 MWp. The company already operates two other solar facilities in the area: the 173-MWp Calatrava solar power plant and the 59-MWp SacaSun facility.

In 2026, AboitizPower has allocated approximately ₱62 billion (around $1.1 billion) for capital expenditures, primarily focused on renewable energy and battery storage projects. The company is recognized as the largest power producer in the Philippines, holding a 24.3% market share with a total attributable capacity of 6,850.63 MW.

Analysts have noted that the proactive local policies in Negros Occidental have played a crucial role in attracting investments in renewable energy. The region's commitment to sustainable energy solutions aligns with national goals to increase the share of renewables in the energy mix, a move that has gained momentum in recent years.
