Malaysia's Trade Surges to RM2.16 Trillion in First Seven Months of 2026

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia's trade performance has shown significant growth, reaching RM2.16 trillion (approximately $460 billion) in the first seven months of 2026, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).

In July alone, Malaysia recorded a trade value of RM364.74 billion ($77.3 billion), marking a 37.3% year-on-year increase. Exports rose by 38% to RM193.6 billion ($41.1 billion), while imports increased by 36.4% to RM171.14 billion ($36.1 billion), resulting in a trade surplus of RM22.46 billion ($4.7 billion). This marks the 75th consecutive month of trade surplus for the country, a streak that began in May 2020.

MITI attributed the robust export growth to broad gains across major sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and mining. Electrical and electronic (E&E) products were the standout performers, achieving the highest monthly export value ever recorded, driven by strong demand for semiconductors and high-value E&E goods. Exports of metalliferous ores, metal scrap, and palm oil also contributed to this growth.

“Despite persistent headwinds from global trade uncertainties, sustained trade activity has continued to support the expansion of gross domestic product.”MITI, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry

Trade with key partners showed significant increases, with exports to China accounting for 18.2% of total trade, followed by the United States at 12.7% and Taiwan at 8.2%. Collectively, trade with ASEAN countries made up 26.8% of Malaysia's total trade in July, highlighting the importance of regional partnerships.

For the January to July period, total exports surpassed RM1 trillion ($211 billion), with a year-on-year increase of 29.2%, while imports rose by 19.8% to RM994.71 billion ($210 billion). The trade surplus for this period stood at RM170.5 billion ($36 billion), more than double the surplus recorded in the same timeframe last year.

Despite facing global trade uncertainties, MITI noted that sustained trade activity has supported Malaysia's economic growth, which saw a 6% increase in GDP in the second quarter of 2026. The ministry emphasized the need for Malaysia to diversify its export markets and products to navigate ongoing geopolitical shifts and supply chain realignments.
