Gamuda Secures RM3.72 Billion MRT Construction Contract in Taiwan

KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Berhad has achieved a notable milestone by securing a RM3.72 billion contract for the design and construction of systems and trackwork for the Keelung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project in Taiwan. This project, awarded by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems under the New Taipei City Government, is part of Gamuda's ongoing efforts to expand its international portfolio.

The joint venture (JV) between Gamuda and Taiwan-based MiTAC Information Technology Corp sees Gamuda holding a 72.84% stake, while MiTAC holds the remaining 27.16%. Gamuda's share of the contract is valued at around RM2.71 billion. The project is expected to take approximately 7.7 years to complete, covering a 15.6 km alignment with 13 stations across Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Keelung City.

Gamuda's scope of work includes trackwork, rolling stock, power supply, signalling, platform screen doors, communication systems, central monitoring systems, automatic fare collection systems, and depot maintenance equipment.

In addition to the Keelung MRT project, Gamuda has also been awarded the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Xiaogang–Linyuan Line Civil Works and Electromechanical Facilities Project, valued at RM3.30 billion. This project, awarded by the Kaohsiung City Government Mass Rapid Transit Bureau, marks Gamuda's tenth infrastructure project in Taiwan since it entered the market in 2002.

The Xiaogang–Linyuan project will involve the construction of three underground stations, one elevated station, and 3.88 km of twin underground railway tracks, along with six crossovers. Gamuda holds a 70% stake in this JV with Taiwanese company Shang Ting, which brings local expertise to the project.

Gamuda's portfolio in Taiwan also includes projects such as the Xizhi Donghu MRT and the Taoyuan City Underground Railway. Beyond rail, Gamuda has Guantang Marine Bridge, Seawall-Taipei Port and the 345kV Gangfeng-Zhongke, Zhongke-Hengshan Underground Transmission Line (Third Section).
