Unilever, the multinational consumer goods company, is preparing to invest in a global supply chain hub located in the Special Economic Zone (KEK) Sei Mangkei in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The groundbreaking ceremony for this significant project is scheduled for August 2026, as confirmed by Susiwijono Moegiarso, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.

“This is not just a commitment; it is a realization of investment.”Susiwijono Moegiarso, Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs

During a press briefing in Jakarta, Susiwijono highlighted that this investment aims to enhance Unilever's global value chain, although he did not disclose the exact investment amount or the anticipated job creation from the project. He emphasized that this investment represents a real commitment from Unilever Global, distinguishing it from Unilever Indonesia's operations. "This is not just a commitment; it is a realization of investment," he stated.

The Sei Mangkei area, located in Kuala Tanjung, is strategically positioned to serve as a hub for Unilever's global supply chain operations. Susiwijono noted that the development of this economic zone is indicative of Indonesia's attractiveness to foreign investors, particularly as they look beyond the traditional economic centers on Java Island. "The development of KEK outside Java is progressing well, and Sei Mangkei has ample land available for such investments," he added.

Officials are optimistic that the establishment of Unilever's hub will not only bolster the local economy but also enhance the overall investment climate in North Sumatra. The presence of a major global player like Unilever is expected to draw further interest from other investors in the region.
