Mount Sinabung Erupts, Alert Level Raised Amid Increased Activity
Following a significant eruption, Indonesian authorities have heightened the alert level for Mount Sinabung to Level III, urging precautionary measures for nearby residents.

Mount Sinabung, located in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, has erupted, leading to a significant increase in volcanic activity. On August 31, around noon local time, the volcano produced an ash column that reached approximately 3,500 meters above its peak, or about 5,960 meters above sea level, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
As a result of the eruption, the alert level for Mount Sinabung has been raised from Level II (Waspada, or 'Alert') to Level III (Siaga, or 'Caution'). This change took effect at 12:30 PM local time on the same day. The PVMBG has been closely monitoring the situation, and the local government is taking necessary precautions to ensure public safety.

In response to the volcanic ash that is primarily drifting towards the southeast, affecting areas such as Berastagi, the Karo District Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has distributed masks to residents in the impacted areas to mitigate health risks associated with ash exposure. Officials have advised the public, including tourists, to avoid activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano's summit and a 6-kilometer radius towards the southeast.
Currently, the assessment of casualties and material losses is ongoing, as authorities continue to monitor the volcano's activity. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is coordinating with local governments and relevant agencies to manage the situation and provide support for those affected by the eruption. They have also issued warnings for communities living near rivers that originate from Mount Sinabung, urging them to be vigilant about potential lahars (volcanic mudflows).

The BNPB has declared a transition status from emergency response to disaster recovery, which will remain in effect for 90 days, starting from July 8 until October 5, 2026. This decision reflects the ongoing commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population.
