Indonesia Launches IDX Green Equity Designation to Promote Sustainable Investment

The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) has officially launched the IDX Green Equity Designation, marking a significant step towards promoting sustainable investment in the country’s capital market. This initiative aims to identify and categorize companies that contribute to a green economy and facilitate the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Initially, three companies have been designated under this new framework: PT Hero Global Investment Tbk (HGII) and PT Kencana Energi Lestari Tbk (KEEN) as Green Equity companies, while PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk (TOBA) received the Green Equity Transition designation. This classification is based on rigorous criteria set by the IDX, which includes external reviews by independent entities such as S&P Global Ratings and PT Sucofindo (Persero).

According to Jeffrey Hendrik, the President Director of IDX, the Green Equity Designation is intended to enhance transparency and credibility within the market. He noted that the designation is not the end goal, but rather a starting point that encourages companies to broaden their participation in sustainable practices. The designation also aims to attract more investment into sectors such as clean energy, low-carbon industries, and green infrastructure.

The IDX Green Equity Designation is categorized into two groups: Green Equity for companies that meet specific criteria for green economic activities, and Green Equity Transition for those still in the process of transforming their operations. For a company to qualify as Green Equity, at least 50% of its annual revenue must come from activities deemed environmentally sustainable.

As global interest in sustainable investing grows, the IDX's initiative reflects trends observed in various regions. A survey by Morgan Stanley indicated that a significant percentage of global investors expressed interest in sustainable investing in recent years, with particularly high interest noted in Europe and Asia Pacific. This growing trend underscores the importance of clear markers for investors seeking to support environmentally responsible companies.

The introduction of the IDX Green Equity Designation is expected to enhance the flow of capital towards green initiatives in Indonesia. By providing a structured and transparent framework, it allows both domestic and foreign investors to better identify and assess companies committed to sustainability. Analysts believe this could significantly bolster Indonesia's efforts to transition to a low-carbon economy without solely relying on government funding.

Moreover, the designation aims to improve the quality of sustainability information available to investors and stakeholders, thereby fostering a more robust ecosystem for sustainable finance. A recent report indicated a high percentage of listed companies had submitted sustainability reports, indicating a growing commitment to transparency in corporate governance and environmental responsibility.

In a broader context, Indonesia is not alone in developing a green equity framework. The London Stock Exchange, for instance, has implemented a similar Green Economy Mark, which recognizes companies generating significant revenue from environmentally beneficial activities. This trend reflects a global movement towards integrating sustainability into financial markets.

Overall, the IDX Green Equity Designation represents a pivotal advancement in Indonesia's capital market, aligning investment opportunities with the global shift towards sustainability and offering a clearer path for companies to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship.
