Cambodia Emerges as a Key Automotive Assembly Hub

Cambodia is gradually establishing itself as a crucial manufacturing base for the automotive industry, with a notable increase in the number of vehicle assembly and automotive parts manufacturing facilities. This trend was highlighted during the recent groundbreaking ceremony for a new automobile assembly plant by KNN Automotive Co., Ltd. in Khsach Kandal district, Kandal province, attended by Chea Vuthy, secretary-general of the Cambodian Investment Board (CIB).

Vuthy emphasized that the investment reflects confidence in Cambodia's political stability and business environment. He noted that in 2025, the CIB registered 630 investment projects worth nearly $10 billion, with an additional 276 projects valued at approximately $4.7 billion approved in the first half of 2026. These figures underscore the Kingdom's commitment to fostering a robust automotive sector.

According to Vuthy, special economic zones (SEZs) play a vital role in diversifying Cambodia's industrial base and attracting high-value investments. He stated that Cambodia is evolving into a manufacturing hub for the regional automotive and supporting industries, driven by the continuous growth in investments in vehicle assembly plants, tyre manufacturing factories and automotive parts production facilities. This growth is expected to contribute to job creation, technology transfer, and improved human resource development.

Cambodia boasts 11 vehicle manufacturing, assembly, and production facilities, with a combined annual production capacity of about 37,900 vehicles. The Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hem Vanndy, indicated that 173,473 vehicles have been assembled domestically, primarily serving the local market. This marks a significant step in Cambodia's journey towards becoming a competitive player in the global automotive supply chain.

In a notable development earlier this month, Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing (Cambodia) inaugurated its assembly plant for the new Toyota Hilux Travo model, further solidifying the country's position in the automotive sector. The influx of automotive investments is also complemented by the establishment of several tyre manufacturing factories and a growing number of automotive technology and component manufacturing facilities.

As Cambodia continues to attract investments in the automotive sector, the CIB is committed to facilitating the smooth implementation of new projects, aligning with the government's vision of making the Kingdom an attractive investment destination. Analysts suggest that this momentum in the automotive industry may enhance Cambodia's economic resilience and integration into global value chains.
