Grab Plans Major Expansion of EV Charging Network in Vietnam

HANOI — Grab Holdings, the Singapore-based ride-hailing and delivery giant, has announced plans to significantly expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Vietnam. The company aims to increase the number of charging ports from approximately 400 to more than 6,000 by 2028. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to support a brand-neutral charging infrastructure, contrasting with the proprietary system developed by VinFast, Vietnam's leading electric vehicle manufacturer.

Grab's initiative is expected to enhance accessibility for various EV brands and promote the adoption of electric vehicles across the country. The expansion will be achieved through partnerships with local firms, allowing for a more inclusive approach to EV charging infrastructure. This is particularly relevant as the Vietnamese government is pushing for cleaner transportation solutions amid rising environmental concerns.

The Vietnamese market has seen a growing interest in electric vehicles, spurred by government incentives and increasing consumer awareness of sustainability. InsideASEAN has reported that VinFast recently launched an affordable EV model priced at $7,148, aimed at increasing car ownership while tightening regulations on gasoline motorcycles. This indicates a competitive landscape where multiple players are vying for market share in the burgeoning EV sector.

Grab's expansion plans align with Vietnam's broader objectives to reduce carbon emissions and transition toward greener transportation options. The government has set ambitious targets for EV adoption, which includes the establishment of a comprehensive charging network. Analysts have noted that the diversification of charging options is crucial for fostering consumer confidence in electric vehicles.

As Grab moves forward with its plans, the company's commitment to building a robust charging network could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transportation in Vietnam. With the rise of electric vehicles, the demand for accessible and efficient charging solutions will likely continue to grow, making Grab's initiative a significant step in supporting this transition.
