Thailand's Women's Volleyball Team Secures Olympic Spot with Historic Asian Championship Win

In a landmark achievement, Thailand's women's volleyball team defeated China 3-2 in the final of the AVC Women's Volleyball Continental Championship held in Tianjin, China, on August 30, 2026. This victory not only marks their fourth Asian Championship title but also secures their qualification for the Olympic Games, set to take place in Los Angeles in 2028.

The match was a nail-biter, with Thailand taking the first set 25-20, only to see China bounce back to win the second set decisively at 25-11. The Thai team, however, fought back to win the fourth set 25-18, forcing a decisive fifth set, which they clinched 15-10. Throughout the match, Thailand scored a total of 99 points, narrowly edging out China, which scored 98 points.

Leading the charge for Thailand was Sasipaporn Chanthawisut, who scored 28 points, making her the highest scorer of the match. Other key players included Tutdao Nukjang and Chatchu-On Moksri, who contributed significantly to the team's success.

This championship win is particularly significant as it not only defends their title from the previous championship in 2023 but also fulfills a long-held aspiration of the team to compete on the Olympic stage. The Thai team has previously faced China in two other Asian Championship finals, winning both in 2009 and 2023.

In addition to their Olympic qualification, Thailand's win also grants them a spot in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup 2027, further elevating the profile of Thai volleyball on the international stage.

The Thai government has pledged financial rewards for the team, amounting to approximately 11.76 million baht (around $340,000), which will be distributed among players, coaches, and the Volleyball Association of Thailand. Each player is set to receive 600,000 baht (approximately $17,000), while coaches and the association will also receive substantial bonuses.

This historic win is expected to inspire a new generation of athletes in Thailand and enhance the popularity of volleyball in the country, which has seen a growing interest in the sport over the past decade.
