In the heart of Singapore, a hidden gem unfolds over 10 kilometres of interconnected trails, where the city’s urban pulse gives way to the serene embrace of nature. The Southern Ridges, a meticulously designed network linking Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, and Kent Ridge Park, invites visitors to explore a verdant landscape that feels a world apart from the bustling streets below.

As you embark on the Southern Ridges walk, the first highlight is the Henderson Waves, Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge, which gracefully arches 36 metres above the ground. Its wave-like structure, crafted from warm yellow balau wood, creates alcoves that serve as resting spots for weary walkers. Here, the cityscape peeks through the foliage, a reminder of the urban environment that lies just beyond this green sanctuary.

Continuing along the trails, the Forest Walk takes you deeper into the lush secondary forest, where the canopy brushes against your head and the sounds of chirping birds fill the air. This elevated walkway, rising between 3 to 18 metres, offers an immersive experience, allowing you to observe the intricate ecosystem below. The path eventually leads to the Alexandra Arch, another architectural marvel that resembles an open leaf, connecting you to the vibrant HortPark, where gardening enthusiasts can indulge in themed gardens and educational displays.

Each park along the Southern Ridges has its own unique charm. Mount Faber Park, one of Singapore’s oldest parks, boasts panoramic views of the Southern Islands. Its attractions, including the Marina Deck and Faber Point, provide perfect spots for photography or simply soaking in the scenery. Meanwhile, Kent Ridge Park is a haven for bird-watchers, with its undisturbed habitats and diverse plant life, making it a popular site for eco-tourism.

As you traverse the trails, the Southern Ridges also tells a story of ecological restoration. Projects like the Sembcorp Forests of Giants showcase towering native trees, while the Singing Forest project aims to attract native bird species back to the area. These initiatives reflect Singapore’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity within its urban landscape.

While the Southern Ridges is a delightful escape, it is essential to prepare for the walk. The trails are well-marked and accessible, but the humidity can be intense, especially during midday. Early morning or late afternoon walks are advisable, allowing you to enjoy cooler temperatures and softer light. Also, bring plenty of water and wear comfortable footwear to navigate the varied terrain.

In a city often associated with skyscrapers and shopping malls, the Southern Ridges offers a refreshing reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty. It is a place where one can reconnect with the environment, all while enjoying the innovative spirit of urban design that characterizes Singapore.
