DBS Bank Faces $1.3 Billion Lawsuit Linked to 1MDB Scandal

SINGAPORE – DBS Bank is facing a lawsuit seeking approximately S$1.298 billion (US$1.03 billion) in damages related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, which has been the subject of extensive investigations and recovery efforts worldwide. The claim was filed by liquidators of four companies: Blackrock Commodities (Global), Platinum Global Luxury Services, Affinity Equity International Partners, and TKIL Global Investments, all of which are currently in liquidation.

In a statement, DBS categorically rejected the claims, asserting that it would vigorously defend itself against the allegations. The bank also noted that it has made no provisions for the lawsuit, indicating its confidence in the outcome. DBS stated that there have been global recovery efforts relating to 1MDB, supported by legal counsel since 2018, and that there has been no claim against DBS during that time.

The 1MDB scandal, which emerged in 2015, involves allegations of misappropriation of funds amounting to at least US$4.5 billion (S$5.7 billion) from the Malaysian state investment fund, co-founded by former Prime Minister Najib Razak. The scandal has led to numerous investigations and lawsuits across multiple jurisdictions, including Singapore, where authorities have been actively scrutinizing transactions linked to 1MDB.

DBS's legal challenges come amid a broader context of recovery efforts related to 1MDB. In July 2025, liquidators filed a separate lawsuit against Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore, alleging that the bank facilitated fraud that resulted in over US$2.7 billion in financial losses. This ongoing legal landscape underscores the complexities and ramifications of the 1MDB scandal, which has implicated various financial institutions globally.

Following the announcement of the lawsuit, DBS shares closed down 0.8% at S$77.50 (US$58.50), reflecting investor concerns over potential liabilities stemming from the case.
